CHAPTER 13
WHAT IF
Anne Marie wanted to hear her friendsâ opinions on motives and start sketching out a timeline, and after snooping around in the NHF office and a second interview with Rosalyn, she had a lot to report to her friends, too.
Kathryn sat down at the picnic table where theyâd agreed to meet to go over the case.
Anne Marie whipped out her notebook to the pages where she was keeping notes about Sheltonâs murder. âI finally got confirmation from Rosalyn of the two complaints though I still donât know who made the second one. Jeff and Vicky admitted to filing a complaint, but Linwood and Loni denied it as well as having any interaction with Shelton.â
Harvey pulled his reading glasses from his pocket, spun the notebook around, and looked at her suspect list. âLinwood and Loni are suspicious, but I donât think they have a motive.â
âThey arenât what they seem.â Anne Marie opened the tournament program to the page listing Linwood and his sister as British. âI spoke with them earlier, and their accents were fake. I donât think theyâre from England. They lied about their nationality. What else?â
âI bet you already have an idea, so letâs hear it.â
âYeah, I think they were faking being terrible horseshoes players, too. Shelton mightâve paid them to lose.â
âNow youâre getting into conspiracy theories with no evidence,â Harvey said. âIâm not encouraging you to get involved, but if youâre going to do it anyway, at least stick to the evidence trail. The Hodges arenât your guys. Scratch them off the list.â
Anne Marie picked up her pen, poised to scratch off the Hodgesâ names, but she couldnât do it. âNot until I talk to them one more time and find out why they faked being British.â
âOkay, leave them for now, but mark my words, they arenât your guys. And neither are Jeff and Vicky. Are you putting those poor people through another round of suspicion? Didnât you learn your lesson with them the first time at Caddo Lake?â
âIâd eliminate Jeff and Vicky, but they argued with Shelton on the first day of the tournament.â
âWhat were they arguing about?â
âI wasnât close enough to hear, so I have it on my list to find someone at the tournament who mightâve overheard what they were arguing about.â
âOkay, leave that one for now. Whatever they were arguing about could be a motive.â
âOr Jeff and Vicky mightâve cast a shadow on his magazine. Thatâs all it took for him to get upset with me.â
âWhat?â
âI know it sounds extreme, but Shelton wasnât a contender for Mr. Congeniality. On opening day of the tournament, I accidentally stepped too close to him and cast a shadow over the magazine he was reading, and he went off on me.â
âThatâs crazy.â
âItâs a bit much.â
âIf Sheltonâs a hothead, he mightâve snapped at the wrong person. What else do we have?â
âThe professional motive, that Shelton was killed because he had an unfair advantage.â
âWas he really that good?â
âSources confirm he and his partner, Holly Campbell, had some amazing skills.
