CHAPTER 13

WHAT IF

Anne Marie wanted to hear her friends’ opinions on motives and start sketching out a timeline, and after snooping around in the NHF office and a second interview with Rosalyn, she had a lot to report to her friends, too.

Kathryn sat down at the picnic table where they’d agreed to meet to go over the case.

Anne Marie whipped out her notebook to the pages where she was keeping notes about Shelton’s murder. “I finally got confirmation from Rosalyn of the two complaints though I still don’t know who made the second one. Jeff and Vicky admitted to filing a complaint, but Linwood and Loni denied it as well as having any interaction with Shelton.”

Harvey pulled his reading glasses from his pocket, spun the notebook around, and looked at her suspect list. “Linwood and Loni are suspicious, but I don’t think they have a motive.”

“They aren’t what they seem.” Anne Marie opened the tournament program to the page listing Linwood and his sister as British. “I spoke with them earlier, and their accents were fake. I don’t think they’re from England. They lied about their nationality. What else?”

“I bet you already have an idea, so let’s hear it.”

“Yeah, I think they were faking being terrible horseshoes players, too. Shelton might’ve paid them to lose.”

“Now you’re getting into conspiracy theories with no evidence,” Harvey said. “I’m not encouraging you to get involved, but if you’re going to do it anyway, at least stick to the evidence trail. The Hodges aren’t your guys. Scratch them off the list.”

Anne Marie picked up her pen, poised to scratch off the Hodges’ names, but she couldn’t do it. “Not until I talk to them one more time and find out why they faked being British.”

“Okay, leave them for now, but mark my words, they aren’t your guys. And neither are Jeff and Vicky. Are you putting those poor people through another round of suspicion? Didn’t you learn your lesson with them the first time at Caddo Lake?”

“I’d eliminate Jeff and Vicky, but they argued with Shelton on the first day of the tournament.”

“What were they arguing about?”

“I wasn’t close enough to hear, so I have it on my list to find someone at the tournament who might’ve overheard what they were arguing about.”

“Okay, leave that one for now. Whatever they were arguing about could be a motive.”

“Or Jeff and Vicky might’ve cast a shadow on his magazine. That’s all it took for him to get upset with me.”

“What?”

“I know it sounds extreme, but Shelton wasn’t a contender for Mr. Congeniality. On opening day of the tournament, I accidentally stepped too close to him and cast a shadow over the magazine he was reading, and he went off on me.”

“That’s crazy.”

“It’s a bit much.”

“If Shelton’s a hothead, he might’ve snapped at the wrong person. What else do we have?”

“The professional motive, that Shelton was killed because he had an unfair advantage.”

“Was he really that good?”

“Sources confirm he and his partner, Holly Campbell, had some amazing skills.
